Weekend Report: I-71 rest area closure rescheduled, I-64 lane closure planned

Traffic will be impacted on I-71 and near the I-64/I-265 interchange

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet continues to make progress on the I-Move Kentucky project as crews work in several areas of I-71, I-64 and I-265. Excavation work along I-71 and bridge work over I-64 will require ongoing closures starting this week.

On Monday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., traffic will be reduced to one lane on I-71 southbound to mobilize equipment for the installation of a sound wall. The lane closure will begin north of Moser Farm Road near mile point 11.8 and end south of Brownsboro Road at mile point 10.3.

Starting Monday at 9 a.m. and continuing for several weeks, traffic will be reduced to two lanes on I-64 westbound while crews work in the median on the I-265 bridge overhead. Traffic will be shift to the outside lanes near the I-265 interchange at mile point 19.

Starting Monday from 1 p.m. to approx. 3 p.m. and continuing daily at the same time, the rest area on I-71 northbound at mile point 13 will be temporarily closed. This closure will ensure the safety of the public and construction crews while evacuation work is conducted nearby. Crews will close the entrance to the rest area at 1 p.m. and check for any remaining vehicles at 2 p.m. before conducting blasting work between 2:30 and 3 p.m. daily. Barricades will be removed, and the rest area will be reopened when deemed safe by construction crews following blasting.

Work schedules may be adjusted due to weather or other unforeseen delays. Drivers should be cautious when traveling through active construction areas. Signage and flaggers will be in place to alert drivers of lane closures and construction zones.

Other I-Move Kentucky Work Areas

I-71/I-265 interchange – Work continues on new bridges, access ramps and along I-71 at mile point 9.1. The new collector-distributor lane recently opened to improve safety for vehicles entering and exiting the roadway. Some traffic impacts including rest area closures are listed above.

I-265/I-64 interchange – Traffic has been reduced to two lanes on I-64 near the I-265 interchange at mile point 19 for work on the I-265 bridge pier overhead. The left lane will be closed from the I-265 southbound ramp to past the I-265 bridge.

I-71 northbound – Blasting work on I-71 northbound and southbound at Moser Farm Road is under way and continues daily. This will require rolling lane closures and short-term road closures daily, including some weekends, between noon and 3 p.m. while blasting is completed near mile point 11.8. Closures are necessary during excavation work for the safety of construction crews and the public.

I-71 southbound – Preparation work in this area is ongoing to allow for widening of the corridor and construction of a new Brownsboro Road (KY 1694) bridge over I-71. This work zone is located between mile point 10.3 and mile point 9.1 of I-71 southbound. No traffic impacts are expected this week. Crews continue to work to extend a culvert that will allow for the widening of I-71. No traffic impacts are expected as work continues between mile point 14.5 and mile point 13.5 of I-71 southbound.

Starting tonight (Tuesday) at 8 p.m. and continuing for several weeks, traffic will be reduced to two lanes on I-64 eastbound near the I-265 interchange at mile point 19 for work on the I-265 bridge pier overhead. The left lane will be closed from the I-265 southbound ramp to past the I-265 bridge.

On Wednesday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., traffic will be reduced to one lane on I-265 southbound to perform pothole repairs. The lane closure will begin near the I-64 westbound ramp and end at the I-64 bridge at mile point 25.4.

On Thursday from 1 p.m. to approx. 3 p.m. and continuing daily at the same time, the rest area on I-71 northbound at mile point 13 will be temporarily closed. Traffic will be impacted near Moser Farm Road on I-71 southbound

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet continues to make progress on the I-Move Kentucky project as crews work in several areas of I-71, I-64 and I-265. Construction work near Moser Farm Road will require a lane closure Friday.

From 9 a.m until 3 p.m. Friday, traffic will be reduced in one lane on I-71 southbound to build an entrance for a sound wall and perform maintenance to TRIMARC facilities. The lane closure will take place between Moser Farm Road at mile point 11.8 and the Chamberlain Lane bridge at mile point 9.8.

Work schedules may be adjusted due to weather or other unforeseen delays. Drivers should be cautious when traveling through active construction areas. Signage and flaggers will be in place to alert drivers of lane closures and construction zones.

From 8 p.m. Thursday until 6 a.m. Friday, traffic will be reduced in one lane on I-71 northbound and southbound to conduct work on the Brownsboro Road bridge overhead. Intermittent lane closures will take place between Chamberlain Lane at mile point 9.8 and the Oldham County line near mile point 11.

Work schedules may be adjusted due to weather or other unforeseen delays. Drivers should be cautious when traveling through active construction areas. Signage and flaggers will be in place to alert drivers of lane closures and construction zones.

From 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, traffic will be reduced in one lane on I-71 northbound and southbound to conduct work on the I-265 bridge overhead. Intermittent lane closures will take place between Springdale Road at mile point 8.7 and Chamberlain Lane at mile point 9.8.

From 8 p.m. Wednesday until 6 a.m. Thursday, the new C-D lane of I-71 southbound and ramps to I-265 northbound and southbound will be closed to install overhead signage. The closure will take place in the C-D lane at mile point 9.1.

From 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. tonight (Friday) and again Saturday night into Sunday morning, the ramp from I-265 northbound to I-64 westbound will be closed. The ramp is located in the I-64/I-265 interchange at mile point 25.4 of I-265.

From 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. each night starting Tuesday, the ramp from I-265 southbound to I-64 eastbound will be closed. The ramp is located in the I-64/I-265 interchange at mile point 25.4 of I-265. Demolition work is expected to span several overnight shifts. The reconstruction of the I-64/I-265 interchange will be a major focus for I-Move Kentucky in 2021.

Over the weekend, I-Move Kentucky opened the collector-distributor (C-D) lane on I-71 southbound for motorists traveling to and from I-265. Those traveling through the area should be cautious when navigating the new traffic pattern. The C-D lane is the first major segment of the four-year, $180 million I-Move Kentucky project to be completed since construction began in May 2020. C-D lanes facilitate ramp movements to improve safety and ease traffic flow.
