Week Ahead: Bridge demolition clean-up requires lane closures on I-71 Wednesday and Thursday

Traffic will be impacted on I-71 near KY 1694 bridge

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet continues to make progress on the I-Move Kentucky project as crews work in several areas of I-71, I-64 and I-265. Ongoing work to clear debris from the recently demolished old KY 1694 bridge will require lane closures on I-71 Wednesday and Thursday. The former bridge was removed last weekend, but additional clean-up work is needed.

Today (Wednesday) from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Thursday, traffic will be reduced to one lane on I-71 southbound to remove bridge debris from the area. On Thursday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Friday, traffic will be reduced to one lane on I-71 northbound to remove debris. The lane closures will take place near the KY 1694 bridge at mile point 10.3.

I-Move Kentucky successfully demolished the former KY 1694 (Brownsboro Road) bridge over the course of two nights on April 23 and 24. Motorists began using the new replacement bridge last week. The newly constructed bridge is higher to facilitate freight movement underneath and wider to include sidewalks for safer pedestrian access. The I-Move Kentucky project continues work to rehabilitate or replace bridges across the project area to meet current standards and extend bridge lifespans.

Work schedules may be adjusted due to weather or other unforeseen delays. Drivers should be cautious when traveling through active construction areas. Signage and flaggers will be in place to alert drivers of lane closures and construction zones.

Other I-Move Kentucky Work Areas

I-71 – Work continues to widen to the roadway including excavation, bridge replacements, paving operations, and the installation sound barrier walls. Ongoing blasting work on I-71 northbound requires rolling lane closures and short-term road closures daily, including some weekends, between noon and 3 p.m. while blasting is completed. Shoulder closures and overnight lane closures may occur during sound barrier wall installation. See planned traffic impacts listed above.

I-71/I-265 interchange – Work continues on new bridges, access ramps and along I-71 near mile point 9.1. The new collector-distributor lane opened earlier this year to improve safety for vehicles entering and exiting the roadway.

I-265 – Work continues to widen the roadway including excavation in the median and paving operations. Ongoing work requires traffic shifts on I-265 northbound and southbound between Shelbyville Road at mile point 26.8 and Taylorsville Road at mile point 23.1.

I-265/I64 interchange – Work continues to rebuild the interchange including a new bridge, access ramps and along I-265 near mile point 25.4.

Weekend Report: Bridge work requires closures and short-term stoppages near I-64/I-265 interchange this weekend

Traffic impacted on I-265 and I-64 while bridge beams are set

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet continues to make progress on the I-Move Kentucky project as crews work in several areas of I-71, I-64 and I-265. Work to set beams for an I-265 bridge over I-64 will require lane closures and intermittent road closures this weekend. This is in addition to previously announced traffic impacts on I-71 this Friday and Saturday.

On Saturday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., traffic will be reduced to one lane on I-265 northbound and southbound to accommodate cranes to set beams for a new bridge over I-64. The lane closures will begin at the I-64 interchange at mile point 25.4 and continue to near the S. Pope Lick Road overpass near mile point 25.

Work to set beams for the bridge will also require traffic to be reduced to two lanes on I-64 eastbound and westbound as well as short-term road stoppages of approx. 15 minutes each on I-64. Rolling road closures will take place as each of the three beams are set over I-64. Closures will be between Blankenbaker Parkway near mile point 17 and Simpsonville Road at mile point 28. These lane closures will provide a staging area for beams and equipment.

I-Move Kentucky previously announced a major closure on I-71 this weekend while the old KY 1294 bridge is demolished. Motorists were shifted to the new bridge Wednesday afternoon to accommodate for this work. Find more information on this closure and detours here.

Work to demolish a bridge will require overnight closures in I-71 N Friday and I-71 S Saturday.

See planned traffic impacts listed above.

I-Move Update: Bridge Demolition Requires Overnight Closure of Interstate 71 This Weekend

Traffic will be detoured between I-265 (Gene Snyder Freeway) and KY 329

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is advising motorists and residents of significant, overnight travel impacts this weekend on I-71 in Jefferson and Oldham counties as part of the I-Move Kentucky project.

Demolition of the old KY 1694 (Brownsboro Road) bridge over I-71 is planned Friday, April 23, and Saturday, April 24, requiring the overnight closure of all lanes of I-71 in one direction each night and an approximate 9-mile detour along local routes in Jefferson and Oldham counties. The I-71 rest areas at mile point 13 will be closed in advance of the associated road closures.

Traffic on Brownsboro Road will not be impacted. Motorists will use the newly constructed replacement bridge starting Wednesday afternoon.

Work to demolish the bridge will require these overnight closures and detours:

  • Friday, April 23: Full closure of I-71 northbound between I-265 (Exit 9) and KY 329 (Exit 14), from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Saturday, April 24: Full closure of I-71 southbound between KY 329 (Exit 14) and I-265 (Exit 9), from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The bridge demolition is scheduled overnight on a weekend to minimize impacts on local roadways.

Traffic on I-71 will be detoured from the roadway between I-265 at mile point 9.1 and KY 329 at mile point 14.5. Barricades will be in place and police officers will assist in moving traffic off the roadway. Signage and flaggers will aid motorists as they travel through the detour and back to I-71. This detour cannot accommodate wide loads.

Motorists Friday can take the following detour: I-71 northbound to I-265 southbound to KY 22 east (Brownsboro Road) to KY 329 to KY 329 Bypass to I-71 northbound. Motorists Saturday can take the following detour: I-71 southbound to KY 329 Bypass to KY 329 east to KY 22 (Ballardsville Road) to I-265 northbound to I-71 southbound.

I-Move Kentucky is replacing all bridges over I-71 within the project area. The existing bridge had reached the end of its lifespan and did not meet current interstate standards for vertical clearance. The newly constructed bridge is higher to facilitate freight movement underneath and wider to include sidewalks for safer pedestrian access.

Work schedules may be adjusted due to weather or other unforeseen delays. Drivers should be cautious when traveling through active construction areas.
