This Week: Work Starts to Prepare for I-71 Widening

Crews working in several areas to advance I-Move Kentucky project

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is starting a new phase of the I-Move Kentucky project, as crews begin work along I-71 near the Jefferson/Oldham county line.

Crews began working this week to extend two culverts that allow water to pass under the current four lanes of I-71. The culvert extensions will accommodate the eventual widening of I-71 between the I-71/I-265 interchange and KY 329 in Oldham County.

Construction work will be performed primarily in the median areas and will not impact traffic on I-71. However, construction vehicles will be entering and exiting the interstate from the median area.

  • Located between mile point 12 and mile point 13 of I-71, just south of the Oldham County rest areas.
  • Work will continue throughout the rest of the summer months.

Other I-Move Kentucky work areas

I-71/I-265 interchange – Crews are continuing to perform excavation work and are completing a soil nail wall along the southbound lanes of I-71.

  • Traffic is not expected to be impacts.
  • Work will continue through the summer.

Brownsboro Road (KY 1694) bridge over I-71 – Crews are continuing to work on relocating a water transmission line in preparation to replace the bridge over I-71.

  • Work started in mid-May.
  • Short, periodic stoppages of traffic on KY 1694 (Brownsboro Road) may be necessary.

Drivers should be cautious when traveling in these areas. Signage and flaggers will be in place to alert drivers of lane closures and construction zones. Work schedules may be adjusted due to inclement weather or other unforeseen delays.
