Weekend Report: Construction work requires lane closures on I-71 and Shelbyville Road this weekend

Traffic will be impacted on Friday and Saturday

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet continues to make progress on the I-Move Kentucky project as crews work in several areas of I-71, I-64 and I-265. Work to install sound barrier walls on I-71 and restriping operations on Shelbyville Road will require lane closures Friday and Saturday.

On Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., traffic will be reduced to one lane on Shelbyville Road under the I-265 interchange for striping work. Crews will be restriping the roadway to designate a single turn lane from Shelbyville Road to I-265 southbound at mile point 26.8.

On Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., traffic will be reduced to one lane on I-265 northbound to perform striping work. The lane closure will begin near Shelbyville Road at mile point 26.8 and continue to LaGrange Road at mile point 30.4.

Motorists will be shifted to a new traffic pattern to enter I-265 from Shelbyville Road to accommodate bridge construction. The first phase of this shift will be implemented this week. New roadway markings and adjusted traffic signals will assist in directing traffic through these changes. The second phase will be enacted after the North pier of the new I-265 bridge completes construction later this year.

On Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., traffic will be reduced to one lane on I-71 southbound while crews install sound barrier walls. The lane closure will begin near the I-71 southbound rest area near mile point 13 and continue to Chamberlain Lane at mile point 9.8.

Work schedules may be adjusted due to weather or other unforeseen delays. Drivers should be cautious when traveling through active construction areas. Signage and flaggers will be in place to alert drivers of lane closures and construction zones.

Other I-Move Kentucky Work Areas

I-71 – Work continues to widen to the roadway including excavation, bridge replacements, paving operations, and the installation sound barrier walls. Ongoing blasting work on I-71 northbound requires rolling lane closures and short-term road closures daily, including some weekends, between noon and 3 p.m. while blasting is completed. Shoulder closures and overnight lane closures may occur during sound barrier wall installation. See planned traffic impacts listed above.

I-71/I-265 interchange – Work continues on new bridges, access ramps and along I-71 near mile point 9.1. The new collector-distributor lane opened earlier this year to improve safety for vehicles entering and exiting the roadway.

I-265 – Work continues to widen the roadway including excavation in the median and paving operations. Ongoing work requires traffic shifts on I-265 northbound and southbound between Shelbyville Road at mile point 26.8 and Taylorsville Road at mile point 23.1.

I-265/I64 interchange – Work continues to rebuild the interchange including a new bridge, access ramps and along I-265 near mile point 25.4.
