I-Move Week Ahead: Exit ramp shutdown, Shelbyville Road lane closures planned for bridge work

Installation of new bridge beams on Interstate 265 will require the closure of an exit ramp and part of U.S. 60/Shelbyville Road. The work is part of the I-Move Kentucky project and will take place overnight Monday, December 6.

From 10 p.m. Monday to 6 a.m. Tuesday, December 7, Exit 27 from northbound I-265 to U.S. 60/Shelbyville Road will be completely closed to traffic. The westbound lanes of Shelbyville Road will also be closed at I-265.

Motorists on I-265 North will be able to use Exit 29 Old Henry Road, go back on I-265 South and then take Exit 27 on that side of the freeway to access Shelbyville Road. Similarly, motorists on westbound Shelbyville Road will be required to take the ramp to I-265 North and then turn around at Exit 29 as necessary.

The closures are necessary to allow for the placement of six large beams on the twin bridges that carry I-265 over Shelbyville Road. Construction crews recently built new piers to widen the bridges, which are 204.5 feet long.

Because of power lines adjacent to the bridges, a crane used to set the six beams will be placed in the westbound lanes of Shelbyville Road. Each of the two largest beams measures more than 102 feet in length. A crane will lift the beams over I-265 South, requiring intermittent traffic stoppages of up to 15 minutes throughout the night. The left lane of I-265 South will be closed during the beam setting to provide a staging area for workers.

Work schedules may be adjusted due to weather or other unforeseen delays. Motorists should be cautious when traveling through active construction areas and consider alternate routes when necessary.
