I-Move Update: Bridge Demolition Requires Overnight Closure of Interstate 71 This Weekend

Traffic will be detoured between I-265 (Gene Snyder Freeway) and KY 329

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is advising motorists and residents of significant, overnight travel impacts this weekend on I-71 in Jefferson and Oldham counties as part of the I-Move Kentucky project.

Demolition of the old KY 1694 (Brownsboro Road) bridge over I-71 is planned Friday, April 23, and Saturday, April 24, requiring the overnight closure of all lanes of I-71 in one direction each night and an approximate 9-mile detour along local routes in Jefferson and Oldham counties. The I-71 rest areas at mile point 13 will be closed in advance of the associated road closures.

Traffic on Brownsboro Road will not be impacted. Motorists will use the newly constructed replacement bridge starting Wednesday afternoon.

Work to demolish the bridge will require these overnight closures and detours:

  • Friday, April 23: Full closure of I-71 northbound between I-265 (Exit 9) and KY 329 (Exit 14), from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Saturday, April 24: Full closure of I-71 southbound between KY 329 (Exit 14) and I-265 (Exit 9), from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The bridge demolition is scheduled overnight on a weekend to minimize impacts on local roadways.

Traffic on I-71 will be detoured from the roadway between I-265 at mile point 9.1 and KY 329 at mile point 14.5. Barricades will be in place and police officers will assist in moving traffic off the roadway. Signage and flaggers will aid motorists as they travel through the detour and back to I-71. This detour cannot accommodate wide loads.

Motorists Friday can take the following detour: I-71 northbound to I-265 southbound to KY 22 east (Brownsboro Road) to KY 329 to KY 329 Bypass to I-71 northbound. Motorists Saturday can take the following detour: I-71 southbound to KY 329 Bypass to KY 329 east to KY 22 (Ballardsville Road) to I-265 northbound to I-71 southbound.

I-Move Kentucky is replacing all bridges over I-71 within the project area. The existing bridge had reached the end of its lifespan and did not meet current interstate standards for vertical clearance. The newly constructed bridge is higher to facilitate freight movement underneath and wider to include sidewalks for safer pedestrian access.

Work schedules may be adjusted due to weather or other unforeseen delays. Drivers should be cautious when traveling through active construction areas.

Week Ahead: Guardrail repair requires ramp closure Tuesday

Traffic impacted at the I-71/I-265 interchange

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet continues to make progress on the I-Move Kentucky project as crews work in several areas of I-71, I-64 and I-265. Guardrail replacement work will require a ramp closure tomorrow.

Starting Tuesday at 9 a.m. until approx. 1 p.m., the ramp from I-71 northbound to I-265 northbound (KY 841) will be closed while crews replace a guardrail that was damaged last weekend. The ramp is located at mile marker 9.1.

An ongoing lane closure is also in place on I-64 westbound near the I-265 interchange. Temporary rest area closures on I-71 northbound also continue this week while blasting work is under way daily between 1 and 3 p.m.

Work schedules may be adjusted due to weather or other unforeseen delays. Drivers should be cautious when traveling through active construction areas. Signage and flaggers will be in place to alert drivers of lane closures and construction zones.

Other I-Move Kentucky Work Areas

I-71/I-265 interchange – Work continues on new bridges, access ramps and along I-71 at mile point 9.1. The new collector-distributor lane recently opened to improve safety for vehicles entering and exiting the roadway. No traffic impacts are planned this weekend.

I-265/I-64 interchange – Traffic will be reduced by one lane on I-64 westbound near the I-265 interchange while bridge work is performed overhead for several weeks. The closure will begin after the I-64 westbound to I-265 northbound ramp shifting the acceleration lane for traffic merging onto the mainline roadway to the left at mile point 19. This is in addition to the traffic impact listed above.

I-71 – Blasting work on I-71 northbound and southbound is under way and continues daily. This will require rolling lane closures and short-term road closures daily, including some weekends, between noon and 3 p.m. while blasting is completed near mile point 11.8. Closures are necessary during excavation work for the safety of construction crews and the public.

Excavation work near the I-71 northbound rest area will require temporary closures of the rest stop daily. This closure will ensure the safety of the public and construction crews while evacuation work is conducted nearby. Crews will close the entrance to the rest area at 1 p.m. and check for any remaining vehicles at 2 p.m. before conducting blasting work between 2:30 and 3 p.m. daily. Barricades will be removed, and the rest area will be reopened when deemed safe by construction crews following blasting.

Preparation work in this area is ongoing to allow for widening of the corridor and construction of a new Brownsboro Road (KY 1694) bridge over I-71. This work zone is located between mile point 10.3 and mile point 9.1 of I-71 southbound. No traffic impacts are expected this week. Crews continue to work to extend a culvert that will allow for the widening of I-71. No traffic impacts are expected as work continues between mile point 14.5 and mile point 13.5 of I-71 southbound.

I-Move Kentucky to open new collector-distributor lane on I-71

New traffic pattern from I-71 S to I-265 will begin later this week

I-Move Kentucky will open a new collector-distributor (C-D) lane on I-71 facilitating ramp movements to and from I-265 this week. This marks a significant milestone in the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s transformative project, which includes upgrades to I-71, I-265 and I-64 to improve safety and ease traffic flow.

Motorists moving from I-71 southbound to I-265 will notice the new traffic pattern and available exit ramps when the final shift is made overnight Wednesday. Intermittent ramp closures will take place at the interchange between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday evening to relocate barrier walls and install striping before the final shift is made.

Update: Due to weather Wednesday, this shift will not take place until later in the week. Check back for updates.

Ongoing construction in the I-Move Kentucky project will also require lane closures on I-71 and I-265 this week. Each night from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning this week, I-71 southbound will be reduced to one lane from mile point 12 to near Chamberlain Lane near mile point 9.8. I-265 northbound and southbound will be reduced to one lane from the I-64 eastbound exit at mile point 25.4 to Shelbyville Road at mile point 26.8 while work to install temporary barrier walls continues.

Work schedules may be adjusted due to weather or other unforeseen delays. Drivers should be cautious when traveling through active construction areas. Signage and flaggers will be in place to alert drivers of new traffic patterns, closures and construction zones.

The new C-D lane is the first major segment of the four-year, $180 million I-Move Kentucky project to be completed. The heavily traveled corridors in Jefferson and Oldham will be better connected, safer and more driver-friendly when construction is completed. I-Move Kentucky is the state’s largest and most significant transportation project since the Ohio River Bridges Project. Construction began in May 2020 and is on schedule for completion in late 2023.

About I-Move Kentucky

I-Move Kentucky will improve safety and relieve congestion in three heavily traveled corridors and address several of Kentucky’s most significant transportation needs. An innovative Design-Build approach is being used to combine four major Kentucky Transportation Cabinet projects into one. Improvements include: expanding I-265 from four lanes to six lanes from the I-71 interchange to Taylorsville Road; expanding I-71 from four lanes to six lanes from I-265 to Kentucky 329 in Oldham Co.; adding a collector-distributor lane on I-71 at the I-265 interchange; and rebuilding the I-265/I-64 interchange.
