The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet continues to make progress on the I-Move Kentucky project as crews work in several areas of I-71 and I-265. Construction work at the I-71/I-265 interchange will impact traffic this Wednesday night.

The ramp from I-265 southbound to I-71 southbound will be closed Wednesday at 8 p.m. to Thursday at 6 a.m. to allow crews to shift a barrier wall and perform grading work.

Drivers should be cautious when traveling through active construction areas. Signage and flaggers will be in place to alert drivers of lane closures and construction zones. Work schedules may be adjusted due to inclement weather or other unforeseen delays.

Traffic will be impacted by road, lane and ramp closures this weekend 

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet continues to make progress on the I-Move Kentucky project as crews work in several areas of I-71 and I-265. Construction work at the I-71/I-265 interchange and paving operations on I-71 northbound will impact traffic this weekend.

Several closures are planned starting Friday at 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. Saturday to accommodate work on a new bridge over I-71. Rolling road closures will be required across all lanes of I-71 in 15-minute intervals throughout the night as beams are set. The road closure on I-71 southbound will start near the rest area near mile point 12. The road closure on I-71 northbound will start at the I-264 (Watterson Expressway) interchange at mile point 5.1. Additionally, Brownsboro Road near I-71 will be reduced to one lane.

Throughout the weekend, paving operations on I-71 northbound will require lane closures between the I-71/I-265 interchange at mile point 9.1 and the Oldham County line near mile point 11. Overnight Friday the right lane will be closed as paving is under way. On Saturday afternoon, traffic will be shifted to newly paved lanes and the left lane will be closed and paved.

On Sunday afternoon until 6 a.m. Monday, the ramp from I-71 southbound to I-265 southbound will be closed to allow for crews to shift traffic.

Drivers should be cautious when traveling through active construction areas. Signage and flaggers will be in place to alert drivers of lane closures and construction zones. Work schedules may be adjusted due to inclement weather or other unforeseen delays.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet continues to make progress on the I-Move Kentucky project as crews work in several areas of I-71 and I-265. Work at the I-71/I-265 interchange will require some rolling road closures and a ramp closure this week as crews construct a new bridge over I-71.

Overnight Wednesday and Thursday nights from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m., I-71 northbound and southbound lanes will experience rolling road closures in 15-minute increments near the I-265 interchange. Roadblocks will be placed across all lanes while crews set beams for the I-265 northbound bridge over I-71. The I-71 southbound roadblock will start near the rest area near mile point 12. The I-71 northbound roadblock will start at the I-264 (Watterson Expressway) split at mile point 5.1.

Additionally, on Wednesday night, the ramp from I-265 southbound to I-71 northbound and the right lane of I-71 northbound near the interchange will be closed from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. On Thursday night, the ramp from I-265 northbound to I-71 southbound and the right lane of I-71 southbound near the interchange will be closed from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Friday.

To set each structural beam for the bridge over I-71, roadblocks will be set up across all lanes on I-71 southbound near the rest area at mile point 12 and I-71 northbound at I-264 at mile point 5.1.

On Wednesday night, the ramp from I-265 southbound to I-71 northbound and the right lane of I-71 northbound near the interchange will be closed from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. On Thursday night, the ramp from I-265 northbound to I-71 southbound and the right lane of I-71 southbound near the interchange will be closed from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Friday.

On Friday night, the ramp from I-71 southbound to I-265 southbound will be closed at 8 p.m. and reopen Saturday morning at 6 a.m. so that crews can work on the roadway surface and switch traffic to a newly paved lane.

I-71 southbound between Chamberlain Lane and I-265 interchange – The left lane of I-71 southbound – between mile point 10 and mile point 9 – will be closed overnight Wednesday. The lane closure will allow crews to move barrier walls in anticipation of a planned lane switch in the area later this week. On Friday, lanes also will be closed to shift lanes to the left for upcoming work on the right side of I-71 southbound.

I-71 northbound at Moser Farm Road – Blasting work on I-71 northbound at Moser Farm Road is under way and will continue in the coming days. Excavation work is needed to eventually widen this area of the I-71 corridor to a total of six lanes. The left lane will be closed on I-71 northbound overnight Thursday to prepare for blasting. Rolling lane closures and short-term road closures also will take place on both northbound and southbound lanes daily, including some weekends, between noon and 3 p.m. while blasting is completed near mile point 11.8 of I-71 northbound.

This preparation work will allow KYTC to begin construction of a new Brownsboro Road (KY 1694) bridge over I-71. This work zone is located between mile point 10.3 and mile point 9.1 of I-71 southbound. No traffic impacts are expected this week.

Construction Crews Commence Blasting Work on I-71

Rolling closures planned on I-71 over coming weeks

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is advising motorists and residents of potential traffic impacts over the next few weeks on I-71 near the I-265 (Gene Snyder Freeway) interchange as part of the I-Move Kentucky project.

Crews excavating near the interchange will perform daily blasting to widen the corridor and add a collector-distributor lane on I-71 southbound. The new lane will improve safety for vehicles entering and exiting I-71 southbound at the I-265 interchange.

Blasting is underway along I-71 southbound at mile point 8.7, just south of the Springdale Rd. overpass. This work may continue daily, including some weekends, over the next few weeks. Work schedules may be adjusted due to weather.

For the safety of the traveling public, rolling closures and occasional stoppages will occur on I-71 during blasting. These rolling closures are scheduled to occur once daily, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Traffic on I-71 will be slowed or stopped at the following points prior to the blasts near the highway:

  • I-71 southbound, starting at the Oldham Co. rest area, mile point 13
  • I-71 northbound, starting at the I-264 (Watterson Expressway) interchange, mile point 5.1
  • I-265 ramps to I-71 southbound, at mile point 9.1

Weekend Report: Lane Closures Planned on I-71

Construction work planned overnight Sunday and Monday

Contractors for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s I-Move Kentucky Project will be working overnight and during the weekend to lessen impacts on daily travelers on Interstate 71 southbound.

Crews will be working along I-71 southbound, between the KY 1694/Brownsboro Road bridge over I-71 and the interchange with the Gene Snyder Freeway (I-265). As result, the left lane of I-71 southbound will be closed overnight Sunday, August 9, and overnight Monday, August 10.

The lane closure will occur between mile point 9.1 and mile point 10.2 of I-71 southbound.

Work in this area will start each night around 8 p.m. and continue through 6 a.m. the following morning. Drivers should be cautious when traveling in this area. Signage will be in place to alert drivers of lane closures and construction zones.

Work schedules may be adjusted due to inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur.

Brownsboro Road (KY 1694) bridge over I-71 – Crews continue construction work to prepare to replace the bridge over I-71. A water transmission line is also being relocated in the area in preparation of bridge construction. Short, periodic stoppages of traffic on KY 1694 (Brownsboro Road) may be necessary. The project is located at mile point 0.3 of KY 1694.

I-265 bridges over La Grange Road – Maintenance and concrete patching work continues as part of improvements to I-265. No traffic impacts are expected.
