I-71 South Closure Scheduled as Resurfacing Project Ramps Up

This project is not part of I-Move Kentucky but is expected to increase traffic through the I-Move corridor.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists that a 10-day closure of Interstate 71 South has been scheduled for later this week in Louisville.

I-71 South will be closed from 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16, to 7 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 26, between I-264 (Watterson Expressway) and I-265 (Gene Snyder Freeway). The ramps to I-71 South at the I-265 interchange will also be closed.

The suggested alternate route for motorists on I-71 South and I-265 South will be I-265 South to I-64 West to I-264 East to I-71 South. Motorists on I-265 North can continue to U.S. 42 West (Exit 37) to I-264 East to I-71 South.

Regional traffic signs and electronic message boards were posted in the project area well in advance, notifying motorists of the closures and alternate routes. Motorists should heed signage, use caution and expect delays while traveling through the work zones.

In August, KYTC announced a $7.6 million asphalt resurfacing project for I-71 between I-265 and the bridge over Blankenbaker Lane at mile marker 3.7. The southbound closure will allow contractors to complete more extensive repairs to the base of the southbound lanes between I-264 and I-265. Northbound lanes will remain open during the southbound closure. The entire project is scheduled to be completed this fall, except for some work on the interstate bridges within the project.

Motorists can get traffic information for District 5, including updates on this project, at www.transportation.ky.gov/DistrictFive/facebook.com/KYTCDistrict5 and twitter.com/KYTCDistrict5. Visit goky.ky.gov for the latest in traffic and travel information from across Kentucky.

I-Move Traffic Alert: Long-Term Traffic Split Planned for I-265 North Lanes Starting Thursday; I-265 Lane Closure Wednesday

Work on Interstate 265 (Gene Snyder Freeway) will require a lane closure Wednesday, Sept. 14, and a long-term split of the northbound lanes of I-265 starting the evening of Thursday, Sept. 15, as part of the I-Move Kentucky project.

Wednesday Closure

From 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Wednesday, the right lane of I-265 North between I-64 and Old Henry Road will be closed for guardrail replacement.

Thursday Closure

Beginning at 8 p.m. Thursday, crews will split northbound driving lanes on I-265 between the I-64 interchange and the Shelbyville Road interchange. During this phase of the project, all traffic needing to exit onto I-64 or Shelbyville Road must use the right lane.

Left-lane traffic will be moved across the median to utilize current southbound lanes, and barrier walls will be in place to separate northbound and southbound traffic.Map showing the traffic shift on I-265 North

This will be a long-term split to replace asphalt with concrete on a high traffic area of I-265 North. It will not reduce capacity for regular traffic, but a width restriction will be in place for this area during construction.

Work schedules may be adjusted due to weather or other unforeseen events.

Motorists should be cautious when traveling through active work zones. Signage will be in place to alert drivers of the lane split.
