I-Move Update: Bridge Demolition Requires Overnight Closure of Interstate 71 This Weekend

Traffic will be detoured between I-265 (Gene Snyder Freeway) and KY 329

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is advising motorists and residents of significant, overnight travel impacts this weekend on I-71 in Jefferson and Oldham counties as part of the I-Move Kentucky project.

Demolition of the old KY 1694 (Brownsboro Road) bridge over I-71 is planned Friday, April 23, and Saturday, April 24, requiring the overnight closure of all lanes of I-71 in one direction each night and an approximate 9-mile detour along local routes in Jefferson and Oldham counties. The I-71 rest areas at mile point 13 will be closed in advance of the associated road closures.

Traffic on Brownsboro Road will not be impacted. Motorists will use the newly constructed replacement bridge starting Wednesday afternoon.

Work to demolish the bridge will require these overnight closures and detours:

  • Friday, April 23: Full closure of I-71 northbound between I-265 (Exit 9) and KY 329 (Exit 14), from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Saturday, April 24: Full closure of I-71 southbound between KY 329 (Exit 14) and I-265 (Exit 9), from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The bridge demolition is scheduled overnight on a weekend to minimize impacts on local roadways.

Traffic on I-71 will be detoured from the roadway between I-265 at mile point 9.1 and KY 329 at mile point 14.5. Barricades will be in place and police officers will assist in moving traffic off the roadway. Signage and flaggers will aid motorists as they travel through the detour and back to I-71. This detour cannot accommodate wide loads.

Motorists Friday can take the following detour: I-71 northbound to I-265 southbound to KY 22 east (Brownsboro Road) to KY 329 to KY 329 Bypass to I-71 northbound. Motorists Saturday can take the following detour: I-71 southbound to KY 329 Bypass to KY 329 east to KY 22 (Ballardsville Road) to I-265 northbound to I-71 southbound.

I-Move Kentucky is replacing all bridges over I-71 within the project area. The existing bridge had reached the end of its lifespan and did not meet current interstate standards for vertical clearance. The newly constructed bridge is higher to facilitate freight movement underneath and wider to include sidewalks for safer pedestrian access.

Work schedules may be adjusted due to weather or other unforeseen delays. Drivers should be cautious when traveling through active construction areas.

Week Ahead: Lane closures planned on I-265, I-71 for construction work

Traffic impacted on I-265 between I-64 and Aiken Road

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet continues to make progress on the I-Move Kentucky project as crews work in several areas of I-71, I-64 and I-265. Work to patch potholes and on the right shoulder will require lane closures tonight.

On Thursday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Friday, traffic will be reduced to one lane on I-265 northbound for work on the shoulder and to patch potholes. The closure will begin at the I-64 interchange at mile point 25.4 and continue to Aiken Road at mile point 27.7.

Work continues several nights this week between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. to install sound barrier walls along I-71 southbound. The lane closure will begin near the rest area near mile point 13 and continue past Moser Farm Road at mile point 11.8.

Work schedules may be adjusted due to weather or other unforeseen delays. Drivers should be cautious when traveling through active construction areas. Signage and flaggers will be in place to alert drivers of lane closures and construction zones.

I-Move Special Alert: I-71 closure planned this weekend to facilitate major excavation work

Traffic detoured to Highway 329 from I-71 northbound in Oldham County

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is advising motorists and residents of potential traffic impacts this weekend on I-71 in Oldham County as part of the I-Move Kentucky project. Major excavation work is planned Saturday, March 20 that will require all lanes of I-71 northbound near Highway 329 to be closed.

Excavation work in this area will allow for the widening of I-71 to improve safety and ease traffic flow. Temporarily closing I-71 northbound will allow for construction crews to conduct a blast Saturday morning in close proximity to the I-71 travel lanes. Additional time is needed following the blast to facilitate safe and efficient clean-up. For the safety of the public, the interstate must be clear at the time of the blast.

On Friday, March 19 at 8 p.m., traffic on I-71 northbound will be reduced to one lane at Highway 329 near mile marker 14 to move barrier wall in advance of the blast.

On Saturday, March 20 at 7 a.m., I-71 northbound will be closed across all lanes at Highway 329 (exit 14). Police will direct traffic off the interstate at the exit to a detour across Highway 329 that re-enters I-71 on the other side of the construction area. The blast will occur at approx. 7:30 a.m. Traffic will be detoured for several hours while crews work to clear materials from the interstate and conduct drilling and other tasks in the area.

When the roadway reopens following the blast and cleanup, traffic on I-71 northbound will continue to be reduced to one lane through Monday, March 22 at 6 a.m.

Short-term closures (approx. 15 minutes each) may occur Saturday, March 20 and Sunday, March 21 at 5 p.m. to accommodate additional blasts in the area. These will be similar to daily blasting road stoppages that occur daily in the project area.

“We thank the public for patience during this short-term detour of interstate traffic,” said KYTC project manager Chris Slone. “This one blast allows us to do the equivalent of three weeks of excavation work in one day, which will greatly minimize traffic impacts in the long run.”

Excavation work is necessary to widen I-71 from four to six lanes.

I-Move Kentucky includes widening I-71 from four to six lanes from I-265 to Highway 329 (Crestwood/Pewee Valley exit). In the past year of the project, significant progress has been made to excavate both sides of I-71 to allow for this high-priority roadway expansion. Construction began in May 2020 and the project will be completed in the Fall of 2023.

Work schedules may be adjusted due to weather or other unforeseen delays. Drivers should be cautious when traveling through active construction areas. Signage and flaggers will be in place to alert drivers of lane closures and construction zones.

Interstate 71 Rest Areas in Oldham County Closed Due to Water Pipe Damage

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists of the immediate closure of the rest areas on Interstate 71 in Oldham County due to a disruption of water service. The rest areas, located at mile point 13, will be closed in both directions until further notice as Louisville Water Co. works to repair the damage.

The service disruption occurred when a contractor working on the I-Move Kentucky project damaged a water pipe that services the rest areas.

The rest areas will remain closed until repairs are completed.

Week Ahead: Construction work requires lane closures Thursday and Friday nights

Traffic impacted on I-71 N in Oldham County

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet continues to make progress on the I-Move Kentucky project as crews work in several areas of I-71, I-64 and I-265. Work to remove a guardrail on a stretch of I-71 northbound in Oldham County will require overnight lane closures Thursday and Friday.

On Thursday and Friday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning, traffic will be reduced by one lane on I-71 northbound while crews work to remove a guardrail. The closure will begin near Moser Farm Road at mile point 11.8 and continue to the Highway 329 exit at mile point 14.5.

Work schedules may be adjusted due to weather or other unforeseen delays. Drivers should be cautious when traveling through active construction areas. Signage and flaggers will be in place to alert drivers of lane closures and construction zones.
